Steel windows are a wonderful way to add the wow-factor to your home. In this blog, we take a closer look at steel windows and how to choose the best hardware for these statement pieces. You can view our full collection of steel window furniture here.
What are Steel Windows?
As the name implies, steel windows feature glass panes supported by robust steel frames. Typically, these frames are welded to provide exceptional strength, allowing them to accommodate large glass panels with ease. Known for their slim profiles, steel windows maximise the intake of natural light while maintaining a sleek, elegant aesthetic.
While frequently used in modern and industrial interiors, the origin of steel windows can be traced to the post-first world war era. For this reason, there are many period properties which feature this style of window, further proving their versatility and timelessness.
The slender design of these profiles requires careful consideration when choosing hardware that will enhance them both aesthetically and functionality.

What furniture do I need for steel windows?
Excluding any internal mechanisms when relevant, there are two main components to consider: the fasteners (also known as the window handles) and the stays.
Night-vent fasteners
Night-vent fasteners are the handles that operate the opening and closing of your windows. Our fasteners feature an offset backplate specifically designed for the slender profile of steel windows. They can be used to lock the window both in the closed position and the night-vent position, which allows ventilation. Each fastener is supplied with a matching push plate keep which can be used with left and right handed windows alike. These fasteners can be fitted to your steel windows using the M5 machine screws provided.

Stays
Window stays are the arms that keep the window propped in position. Our steel window stays have slim profiles and offset backplates designed to work with the thin ledges found on steel windows. These sets are supplied with a stay pin and a stay rest as standard, allowing the stay to be secured in multiple positions. A locking stay pin can also be purchased separately to enable secure locking in the closed position via a grub screw. Our stays are available in two sizes (8” and 10”), making them suitable for a wide range of window sizes. Our steel window fasteners are also supplied with M5 machine screws for secure fitting.
