Window Handles & Stays
What type of window handle do I need?
This depends on your window type and requirements. If you have a casement window, you can use a locking fastener if you need it to lock, or a non-locking fastener if you don't. If you have uPVC windows which contain a locking mechanism, then you'll need an espag. handle. For more information, visit the Choosing Ironmongery section of our website.
How do locking and non-locking fasteners work?
Our fasteners work via a grub screw incorporated into the handle which is screwed into the fixing plate using an Allen key.
Do I need a left or right-handed window handle?
Although some of our handles are reversible, others are handed, so it's important you choose the correct one. When viewing your window from the inside, if your handle opens clockwise away from the frame, you'll need a left-handed version. Equally, if your handle opens anti-clockwise away from the frame, choose a right-handed handle.
Whats the difference between Night Venting fasteners and normal fasteners?
Our standard fasteners hold the window closed using an on the handle that fixes into a mortice plate within the window frame. They can only be open or closed. Our Night Venting fasteners close onto a pin which protrudes away from the window frame. This allows the window to be fully open, fully closed, or 'night-locked' which locks the window slightly ajar to allow air flow.
What size window stay do I need?
We have three different sized stays: 8", 10", and 12" (although this may vary slightly due to the hand forged nature of our products). We take our measurements from the fixing plate to the end of the stay. We recommend using the specific product measurement stated, which can be found on the product page for each individual item.
Are you window stays lockable?
Yes and no. The hand forged nature of our window stays means they don’t have a built-in locking mechanism. However, you can purchase a separate Locking Stay Pin to replace one of the existing pins. This allows the window to be locked in an open/closed position using an Allen key.
Do your locking window fasteners/stays comply with insurance requirements?
Although our locking fasteners and stays are strong, you'll have to check your insurance policy to see if they satisfy your insurance requirements.
What's a window espagnolette handle?
Espag. handles are designed to operate an internal locking mechanism within a window. A secure shoot bolt system operates when you turn the espag handle, which moves the attached spindle to engage the lock. The spindle supplied with these handles is long, so it can be cut down to the desired size but has a standard diameter which works with most lock types. All our espag handles come with a grub screw near the handle which can be locked using the provided Allen key for additional security.
Will an espag handle fit any type of window style, type or material?
Our espag. handles are designed to fit any standardised locking systems (i.e., those with standardised fixing centres and spindle sizes) including stand-alone and multi-point lock sets. As long as the window lock is designed for espagnolette handles, it should work on any window material, including timber, plastic, and aluminium.
