Garden Cottage Transformation

Garden Cottage Transformation

It’s no secret that ironmongery is an everyday necessity, but did you know that it’s so simple to update, and doing so can elevate the entire look and feel of your home?

Garden Cottage is an excellent example of this, and we were lucky enough to get a sneak-peek inside. This home was originally several small gardener’s cottages built in the early Victorian era, and made in to one property in the 1950’s.  We invite you on a tour of this stunning property which has been fitted with carefully chosen From The Anvil ironmongery throughout.

Pictured above: the original Garden Cottages prior to their renovation.

Upon approaching the property, you’re greeted with a picturesque country cottage with historic stone walls and mesmerising landscape gardens. The cornflower blue front door sets the tone for the entire house, adorned with our Aged Bronze Newbury Slimline Lever Espag. Lock Set. Aged Bronze is a great choice for this home as its dark, matt texture creates a rich appearance, complemented by the patterned tilework at the foot of the door.

This extensive cottage has several exterior entrances, including white painted doors at the rear which make use of the same lever door handles. Many of these have been paired with our External Beeswax Forged Cabin Hooks. This finish is unique to From The Anvil and is manufactured using our exclusive anti-corrosive beeswax, specifically designed to protect our products from weathering and damage when used externally.

Another of our hard-wearing finishes; Polished Nickel, has been used on a Newbury Slimline Lever Espag. Lock Set on another exterior door. This reflective, high-sheen finish offers a subtle warmth that suits various colour schemes and works wonderfully with this navy-blue door. By choosing a variety of finishes, the owners have differentiated each of their doors, but maintained consistency by using the same style of lever handle.

During the day, this bright and airy cottage is flooded with light thanks to the vast number of windows decorating the exterior. High-quality double glazing and sturdy timber frames were used to build the windows, so it was only appropriate that the owners selected ironmongery that’s just as durable and long-lasting. Hence, they opted for a combination of Aged Bronze Reeded and Polished Nickel Newbury Espagnolettes. The Aged Bronze finish of the Reeded espagnolettes highlights the ornate detail on the handles, adding a vintage flair to the rooms. On the other hand, our Newbury Collection is well suited to a Polished Nickel finish as it showcases its smooth, simplistic shape and creates a futuristic contrast against the retro, purple wallpaper as can be seen in the image below.

On the ground floor of the house, Aged Bronze makes a reappearance in the form of our Prestbury Mortice/Rim Knob Sets, used on many of the interior doors. This is a perfect choice for period properties as our Prestbury collection is inspired by original Georgian designs; an ode to the past. For this reason, the upper floor of the house uses the same style of door knob, but in a more modern Polished Nickel finish.

For additional privacy where required, some of these rooms also make use of our Polished Nickel Round Bathroom Thumbturns which enable doors to be locked. The ensuite bathroom is a good example of this, and the metallic hues of the door furniture work well with the soft painted timber and patterned wallpaper. To match the internal doors, the bathroom and utility cupboards have been fitted with our Polished Nickel Prestbury Cabinet Knobs. Such continuity radiates extravagance.

Much like the rest of the house, the kitchen has been lovingly designed to balance history and heritage with a sleek, contemporary aesthetic. Featuring royal blue cabinets coupled with the same Prestbury Cabinet Knobs found in the bathroom and our Art Deco Drawer Pulls in Polished Nickel, it has a refined and sophisticated look. In other parts of the kitchen, these drawer pulls have been chosen in Aged Brass and partnered with soft grey cabinetry, which ties in nicely with the Aged Brass Reeded Espagnolettes on the windows. Our Art Deco products are understated, infusing their surroundings with energy without overpowering them. The juxtaposition between the two finishes evokes a sense of lavishness that reflects the property’s timeless aesthetic.

For the finishing touches, the owners selected a variety of our signature pendant lighting. In the kitchen, they used a single Slate Harborne Pendant with a Hammered Brass interior. This distinctive dappled texture is achieved by our expert craftsmen who meticulously hammer and finish each pendant by hand. Our Smooth Brass Harborne Pendant was also incorporated into the space, and its characterful appearance and mesmerising gold hues make an undeniable statement.

In the living room, our White Gloss Hockley Pendant has been chosen in Birch, a colour inspired by the whimsical bark of a silver birch tree. This pale grey shade brings a modern element to the room, standing out against the dark, antique fireplace and other traditional features of this period property. Our Birch Hockley Pendant has also been used elsewhere with a classic Smooth Brass interior to add dimension and intrigue to its surroundings.

In the orangery, you’ll find a pair of our Smooth Brass Brindley Pendants positioned over two reading chairs. The warm, gentle glow produced by these lights creates the perfect setting for cosy evenings of relaxation and comfort.

Overall, a wide array of different styles and finishes of window, door, and cabinet furniture has been used to create a truly unique feeling of interest and vitality throughout this property. The owners knew they wanted products that would suit both their aesthetic and functional needs, which is why they put their trust in From The Anvil.
