Expert Kitchen Advice From @browsondesignandbuild

Top Tips for Designing your Kitchen

We spoke to Browson Design and Build, a bespoke kitchen, wardrobe and interior joinery business based in Richmond on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales.

Q: As we enter another year, what are your predictions for kitchen design trends?

A: The kitchens we are producing are becoming less purely functional spaces and more of an extension of the home. Their purpose is now far more than simply a place to cook and prepare food. They’re more homely with space to gather, entertain and relax. We expect to see lots more open shelving, free-standing furniture and more tactile materials. Strong grains on woods and within marble and quartz worktops.

Q: What’s the first thing you would recommend if a client would like to redo their kitchen?

A: Visit a trusted kitchen designer or company to discuss your likes and needs. Think about how you use your kitchen. Are you fully utilising your space? Is your kitchen used as a space to dine? Are you a keen cook? Do you often entertain a large number of guests/family? The layout of your kitchen is key and this is all determined by how you like to move within it.

Q: What inspires you?

A: Working with new textures and materials. I like putting a twist on traditional methods and ways of working to produce different styles and designs of cabinetry.

Q: What is your favourite design trend?

A: Fluted and ribbed surfaces on both kitchens and wardrobes. They’re simplistic in their design but bring lots of texture and interest to a room.

Q: What style of kitchen was the most popular in 2021?

A: For our customers it was the framed shaker. An extremely popular design that you just can’t go wrong with. It stands the test of time and suits nearly all styles of home!

Q: What is your favourite Anvil product and finish, why?

A: The Prestbury range in brass. Not only do I like it’s detail but it’s of great quality too, which you can tell by the weight of it. It finishes off a simple v grooved cabinet perfectly.

Q: How important would you say lighting is within a kitchen and why?

A: Very important. Not just from a practical point of view but it can really set the tone and feel of the room.

Q: What’s your favourite project that you have worked on and why?

A: The one I’m in the middle of completing within a large townhouse in Islington, London. We’ve incorporated a drinks area and small utility room/space within the kitchen. It has been quite a challenging project in figuring out how to best utilise the space we have but I’ve really enjoyed this aspect of it. I’m also enjoying seeing how it’s all coming together!
