Door Knobs

Can I use one of your centre door knobs as a functioning door handle?
In theory, yes. However, we wouldn’t recommend it as our centre door knobs are large and very heavy. This would put a huge strain on even the most heavy-duty latch. Please note, our centre door knobs aren’t supplied with a grub screw to locate and lock the spindle into position which will make it difficult to use them as a functioning door knob.
What size backset lock do I need?
The ‘backset’ is the distance from the edge of the door to the centre of the spindle & determines where a knob will sit on the door. Usually, a 64mm case has a 44mm backset, & a 77mm case has a 56mm backset. With door knobs, you'll want the spindle to sit central to the stile. With door handles, you can offset them slightly to accommodate the lever. Check your existing backset against your new one to ensure its large enough, otherwise you may hit your knuckles when opening the door.
What’s the difference between Rim knobs and Mortice knobs?
Whether you need a rim or mortice knob depends on whether your lock/latch mechanism is fitted internally or externally on your door frame. Rim knobs are used with rim locks, which are mounted on the surface of the door. Rim knobs feature a removable rose which can be used or removed depending on your preference. Mortice knobs are used with mortice locks/latches, which are recessed into the door frame. Mortice knobs have a fixed rose which cannot be removed.
Are your door knobs sprung or unsprung?
All our mortice knobs are unsprung. This is because mortice knobs are fitted in conjunction with a latch. If you have a spring in both the mortice knob and the latch, the knob can become stiff and difficult to turn. Unsprung mortice knobs prevent this. If you’re unsure which type you require, visit our Locks & Latches Guide for more information.
Do your door knobs work with extra thick doors?
Our door knob sets are either supplied with a single, long spindle which can be cut to size, or two spindles, one of which is designed for standard doors, and the other for slightly thicker doors. We also sell a variety of Spares & Accessories if you're looking for a specific size.
What type of lock/latch should I use with your door knobs?
We always recommend using a heavy-duty lock or latch with our knob sets. These are extra strong, which helps the knob spring back to its original position after turning. The exact lock type depends on the purpose of the door. For front/back doors, you'll need a 5 Lever Sash Lock. For bathroom doors, you'll need a bathroom lock and a thumbturn.  For non-locking doors, you can use a door knob set with just a latch. Visit our Locks...
What size lock/latch should I use with a knob set?
We recommend using a 3", 4", or 5" lock or latch to ensure the knob is a suitable distance from the edge of the door. Anything smaller than a 3" lock/latch may not leave enough space for your hand and cause you to catch your knuckles on the door frame. These different sizes each have a specific distance (backset) for the centre of the knob to be positioned away from the edge of the door. These dimensions can be found in the specifications & technical drawings for individual products, and in...
Can I fix a single knob to one side of a door so it doesn't turn?
Yes, of course! You'll need to fit the knob to a Taylor's Spindle which is screwed (often sunk into) the surface of the wardrobe/cupboard door and is fixed, meaning that when you fit the knob to it, it becomes a static pull handle. This is great for creating a uniform look/style in a room.
What's included in your knob sets?
Our basic knob set includes two knobs, a threaded spindle, and the necessary fixing screws. Some knob sets may include two spindles (a standard one, and a longer one for thicker doors) and a set of escutcheons - these are handmade sets. These sets don't come with a lock/latch, so you'll either need to buy one separately, or use an existing lock/latch. If using a lock, we also recommend purchasing two escutcheon plates to cover the key holes, or a thumbturn for bathrooms.
